AN EVALUATION OF LANDSCAPE DESIGN EFFECTS ON USER EXPERIENCE ANDSATISFACTION WITHIN UNIVERSITY CAMPUS ENVIRONMENTS
Urban environments contain a wide range of open and green spaces, including private residential gardens, public neighborhood and beach parks, forests, and semi-public open spaces associated with public institutions such as hospitals, schools, and municipal buildings. University campuses represent a particularly important category within this spectrum. They function as dynamic, interactive environments where students and faculty engage for educational, recreational, social, and psychological purposes, making the design quality of these spaces a critical factor in supporting daily activities and overall well-being. This study investigates proposed digital redesign concepts for educational open spaces at Al al-Bayt University. It assesses user satisfaction after the integration of new landscape elements. The course objectives related to the research topic were introduced over several weeks. Subsequently, a questionnaire was developed to assess student satisfaction with the campus. After collecting the responses, the data were processed using an artificial intelligence tool (GPT-5.3, OpenAI) to simulate the campus environment based on students? opinions and expectations. The findings show that introducing landscape elements into previously undeveloped or underutilized areas leads to clear improvements in educational, recreational, aesthetic, and psychological indicators. When landscape features are present, student and user satisfaction levels rise clearly, whereas their absence correlates with lower preference and engagement. This study provides an illustrative example of how open and green spaces influence user experience in semi-arid and arid university environments, offering insights that are especially relevant to institutions across the Middle East and Northeast regions.
