A Royal Decree was issued to establish Al al-Bayt University on the eighteenth of Safar 1413 AH - seventh of August 1992 AD, to be one of the knowledge beacons in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The university started its first academic year in 1994/1995 A. The Chemistry Department began in 1994 as a part of the College of Arts, Sciences and Education to award bachelors and master's degrees.

The department offers courses for students of the College of Science, the College of Nursing, the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the College of Engineering, in addition to students of the parallel program.

The department prepares national and Arab cadres specialized in chemistry, which our societies need in many fields, the most important of which is education. The department has been enthusiastic to update and develop its study plans, in a way that contributes to graduating qualified students who have a good academic reputation at the local or international levels.

The department council includes (16) qualified faculty members who hold Ph.D degrees in chemistry and of all scientific ranks, in addition to a teacher who holds a master's degree.

The department is keen on continuous communication with its students by activating the office hours for each faculty member. The doors of the faculty offices are open for students to communicate with their professors, this communication is continuous even after graduation. The department graduates often find suitable job opportunities and start to serve their community as soon as they obtain their academic degree and some of the graduates have joined the master's and doctoral programs in specific fields, and they have achieved distinguished scientific excellence.

Statistical information: 

The number of students who graduated from the Department of Chemistry since its establishment (1994) until the beginning of the first semester of the academic year (2020-2021) reached 1625 male and female students at the bachelor's level, and 96 male and female students at the master's stage. The number of students currently enrolled in the study is 577 male and female students in the bachelor's program, and 39 male and female students in the master's program.​
